Vax shortlisted for ‘Birmingham Made Me’ design and innovation awards
Vax, the UK’s best-selling floorcare brand, has been shortlisted for two ‘Birmingham Made Me’ design and innovation awards.
The Vax Air – the lightest full size multi-cyclonic upright vacuum cleaner in the world – is a finalist for the ‘Best Radical Design/Innovation 2012’ award, while the eco-friendly Vax ev cardboard vacuum cleaner is in the running for ‘Best Design Collaboration with Education 2012’. The winners will be decided by a public vote.
Paul Bagwell, Director of New Product Development at Vax, said: “As a Midlands-based company we’re proud to be taking part in this celebration of British design and innovation, and we’re delighted that the talents of our Birmingham product design team been have recognised in the awards with two nominations.”
The awards form the finale of the 'Birmingham Made Me’ Design Expo, a new week-long exhibition intended to raise the profile of the region's design and innovation skills. Based in Birmingham’s Mailbox, the event showcases designs from a range of West Midlands-based businesses, schools and universities and is open to the public from 15th – 22nd June. Both shortlisted products will be on show to the public at Vax’s stand during the Expo.
The Vax Air upright vacuum cleaner was created by Vax’s design team at their R&D labs in the West Midlands. It was the first in a range of upright vacuums designed, component by component, to be as lightweight as possible in a full size chassis. While other manufacturers have produced their own lightweight models, three years after the first version launched, the Air is still the lightest full-size multi-cyclonic upright vacuum cleaner in the world and a consistent best-seller.
The Vax ev cardboard vacuum cleaner was designed by Loughborough University student Jake Tyler for his final year degree project. He was supported by the design team at Vax’s R&D labs, where he worked for a year under the company’s student placement scheme. Jake’s ‘eco vac’ has been constructed for optimum sustainability, using recycled and recyclable materials that reduce the burden on landfill. He is now employed full-time by Vax and is working on a number of exciting new projects.
