Vax’s winter cleaning tips to prepare your home for the Festive Season
The build up to Christmas can be lots of fun, but it can also be stressful, costly, and a bit overwhelming, so why add hours of cleaning to your ‘to do’ list? It’s something we all wish we could brush under the rug from time to time, but now you don’t need to! Our top ten winter cleaning tips will help prepare your home for all the festivities this time of year brings.
Before you roll up your sleeves, you might want to consider spreading your cleaning tasks over a few days or a week and decide what to clean each day. This means you’ll only need to complete quick touch ups before any guests arrive, saving you a lot of time. There’s so much to do over the Christmas period, so we like to think ‘little and often’.
1.Clean up your decorations – It’s exciting unpacking last year’s boxes bursting with tinsel and tangled lights. However, it’s not so exciting when they’re covered in dust after being in storage for 12 months. Pieces of glitter, plastic tree branches, and broken baubbles are all part of the mess, so how can you clean quickly and efficiently to avoid dust spreading? First make sure to wipe down any surfaces or areas where your decorations will be placed. It’s also a good idea to clean decorations as you take them from the box, because it stops you spreading dust around. It’s also really awkward cleaning around decorations once they’re in place, so cleaning as you go will save you a lot of time and frustration.
2.More hands make less work - The more people you involve, the quicker your home is cleaned, so why not round up the troops and assign each family member a task. No job is too big or too small - simply dusting and wiping can make all the difference. If you have younger children who don’t find the idea of cleaning fun, you could turn it into a game! Motivating your family to clean up after themselves (rather than you doing it for them) will also free up your cleaning time over the holiday period (and maybe gain them some early treats!)
3.Clean what you usually avoid - There are certain things in our home that we never want the hassle of cleaning, such as curtains, sofa cushions and bedding. Christmas is the perfect time of year to refresh these items. You wouldn’t clean these every day, but having them fresh for Christmas can make a room smell great and look much brighter. Use a multifunctional steam cleaner to refresh curtains, upholstery and even mattresses. Cleaning these will also reduce dust and odours which can be beneficial for allergy sufferers.
4.Get rid of clutter - Clutter can build up quickly and before you know it, there’s stuff everywhere! So try to make time to take any unwanted items to a local charity shop. They’ll be appreciative of your donations this time of year and you can feel good knowing someone else might enjoy them this Christmas.
5.Blast through bathrooms – Your bathroom will be used frequently if you’re entertaining over Christmas. To clean your bathroom fast we advise diluting bleach with hot water in a basin. Use a cloth to dip into the basin and start by cleaning flat surfaces, then your shower and sink. Leave the toilet until last. By only using one ingredient, you’re eliminating different cleaners and sprays so you can get the job done quicker. Do this a few days prior to Christmas and top up on the day of the party by using bleach around the toilet bowl. We also recommend buying a toilet bowl blocks so every time someone flushes it’ll leave a lovely fresh scent.
6.Get cordless - Vacuuming can feel like a dreaded task. Having to unplug at each room, then carry the vacuum up and down stairs can take up precious time, and with a heavy machine it can take even longer.
At Christmas you’ll probably already be busy decorating, buying presents and preparing dinner, so quick and easy cleaning is what you’ll need. We recommend going cordless with your vacuum cleaner. Eliminating the cord and plug will speed up your cleaning time and dare we say it, make the experience enjoyable.
The Vax Air Cordless Lift is perfect for quick cleaning, but can still tackle even the biggest and toughest mess. It has two LithiumLifeTM batteries that last up to 60 minutes, so you can have one battery charging up while use the other. It also has a lift-out cylinder so cleaning stairs and cars are no problem. Using a cordless vacuum cleaner will decrease your cleaning time so you can focus on what matters - filling your face and opening presents!
7.Use anti-bacterial wipes for a clean refrigerator - The fridge is a focal point at Christmas. It’s where you store party food, snacks and drinks and you want to avoid a dirty fridge when guests help themselves by using anti-bacterial wipes. They’re quick, easy and will remove germs and lift stains within a matter of minutes. This is much faster than using a cloth and spray and when you’re done, simply throw the wipe in the bin. It’s as simple as that!
8.Clean your carpets - Before and after! Cleaning your carpets is a great way to brighten and deep clean your home for Christmas. On Christmas day, kids can spend all day on the carpet or rug opening and playing with their presents, so it’s nice to ensure that they’re clean. Christmas may also involve a lot of red or mulled wine, sherry and snacks and dips, which taste great but doesn’t look so good on your carpets! If there is a spill, dab with kitchen roll immediately to remove as much liquid as possible, then clean the next day with a Vax Dual Power Pro carpet washer to remove the stain completely. Be conscious of muddy shoes, (unless you ask guests to keep shoes at the door). Don’t panic though; a Vax carpet cleaner will remove any ground in shoe prints in no time!
9.Prepare a guest bedroom - Christmas time often attracts unexpected guests and family, or the unplanned friends staying over. Having a clean guest bedroom ensures your prepared for the unexpected. Rooms that have been unoccupied for a long time tend to gather a lot of dust, so a quick dust around and fresh bedding should make all the difference.
10.Final touches – On the last day of your cleaning before the big day you should focus on final touches and avoid any heavy cleaning. Things you can’t forget: Top up bins with fresh bin liners, provide the bathroom with clean towels, new soap, fluff your pillows, and add some decorative touches to get into the Christmas spirit. We love cinnamon candles, mistletoe, and decorative sweet bowls with chocolates for guests. These can all be found at your local bargain store for a low price but they make a big difference to the atmosphere and overall feel of your home!
So there you have it, ten winter cleaning tips that we hope will save you time, effort and stress (with some added sparkle and cheer.) Let this time of year be magical and enjoy the fun of Christmas and entertaining without being bogged down by cleaning.
